The zirconia ferrules and sleeves are our main products of fiber optic components, suitable for high end performance and quality for various fibers, connectors and device terminations.
Our zirconia ferrules are divided into 4 categories, single-mode, multi-mode, capillary and custom as well as other custom zirconia products with various shapes not associated with the fiber optic industry.
Orbray’s zirconia ferrules and sleeves are designed at our head offices in Tokyo, Japan and manufactured at our own factories based on a thorough production and quality control systems. All of our ferrules are inspected for outer diameter, inner diameter and concentricity by our proprietary inspection measurement gauges and methods.

Diffusion bonding is a solid-state joining process that creates metallurgical bonds at the atomic level, without melting the parent materials. This advanced technique involves bringing two perfectly flat, clean surfaces into contact under high temperature and pressure. Over time, atoms from each surface “diffuse” across the interface, forming a joint that is as strong, or even stronger, than the base material itself.
Traditional manufacturing methods for complex die components often involve multi-piece assemblies, brazing, or welding, which can introduce weaknesses, stress concentrations, and limits on design freedom. Diffusion bonding eliminates these drawbacks, opening up new possibilities for die design and performance.
Since our first manufactured singlemode zirconia ferrule in 1980, we have always taken into consideration our end user’s comments and suggestions, and continued to improve our products. Although the zirconia ferrules appear to be just a simple ceramic cylinder, the outer diameter (OD) of the ferrules is grinded and polished at a controlled submicron level. Moreover, the dimensions of the ferrules need to be precise with a tolerance level of ±0.0005 mm, which is the requirement for a singlemode type ferrule.
The ferrules have a precise hair-thin Inner Diameter (ID) for aligning the optical fiber with various ODs. The ferrule’s ID is polished to a diameter of 0.001mm or larger than the OD of the optical fiber. Moreover, this ID has a precision of 0.001mm in concentricity and 0.0005mm in eccentricity for the singlemode ferrules used for optical communication components. See our catalog for details.
At present, the Multimode Zirconia Ferrules are of low price and typically required for LAN and/or SAN Applications. However, multimode ferrules were often considered to be an inferior product when compared with the singlemode ferrules. Although low at cost, its capabilities vary and in the past, a constant supply of these ferrules was a problem.
In our case, the multimode zirconia ferrules are manufactured by an injection molding process similar to the manufacturing of our other zirconia ferrules. To achieve the same standard as the singlemode zirconia ferrules, we optimize the manufacturing process of the multimode ferrules and can provide constant supply of inventory.
The multimode ferrules vary in OD Sizes. The OD Ferrule Size for ST, FC and SC Connectors are φ2.5mm. The ferrule OD isφ1.25 mm for the MU and LC Connector Versions. The Multimode Ferrules are available with and without a flange. See our catalog for details.
The Zirconia Capillaries’ main function is to align or connect various types of optical Device and modules. Since zirconia capillaries are manufactured by the same injection molding process as our standard ferrules, stable performance of the capillary is then ensured.
We do not only provide capillaries by themselves, but with metal housings or ferrule assemblies which are manufactured by press fitting capillaries into highly weldable Stainless Steel Materials such as SUS 304, 403, 316, and L Metals. There are various OD Capillary Configurations such as φ1.8mm, φ2.0mm, φ2.5mm and φ3.0mm.

Metal Ferrule Assemblies are required for the manufacturing of Coaxial Module, Butterfly Module and Optical Functional Module. Our Metal Ferrule Assemblies are manufactured by press fitting our zirconia capillaries into precision metal housings and flanges.
We can accommodate any welding process and can offer metal housings with various Stainless Steel (SUS) Materials such as SUS 304, SUS 430 and SUS 316. Custom configurations and designs can also be offered.
